Ed, Truth be known neither side can likely defeat the other, barring outside intervention which I do not see. Remember that the NIF ousted via military coup the legitimate Sudanese Government in 1989.

So IMO the longer the war goes on in a stalemate, the more the prestige,authority of the current government suffers....And in a guerilla war, you win simply by not losing....

Let's see what the April negotiations bring. The SPLA will not stand for Sharia (Islamic Law) to be extended to their part of the Sudan just as the Irish in a similar situation in the last two centuries did not wish to support the Church of England. As soon as the NIF backs off of that position, then the peace talks will move forward....
