Qdog, Take it easy on those sweets it's getting you all excited and you are losing your perspective. Just because you have some money tied up in company A doesn't mean that company A's competitors are akin to Darth Vader and Atilla the Hun. The GSM standard works and GSM switches can have ATM interfaces, if that is the ideal interface to PSTN networks for voice traffic, which I doubt it is but for the sake of arguement we'll say it is. Obviously GSM is not the most technically elegant solution but like most (all) telecom standards it was designed by committee and we should be surprised it works as well as it does. By the way, GSM is continually evolving and improves every year with a new release to the spec. that adds more features such as packet data and SIM card functionality.

FYI the IS95 bandwidth was chosen to fit into the extended Amps bands which vary in size between the A and B operators, not for the PCS bands as you mentioned. If that was the case I suspect that QCOM would have chosen a much wider bandwidth for IS95, and they've said as much. But then there would be no IS95 for the cellular bands and that would not be commercially acceptable.

Dont underestimate Ericsson's ability to do CDMA. They've said all along the like CDMA but did not believe it was optimal to do it in a 1.25 Mhz bandwidth, which is true. It's also true they've tried to keep QCOM out of their Nordic sandbox and have played some dirty tricks, but the market now has the chance to make the final cut based on real performance. WCDMA is the best choice for any high data rate, high capacity 3G system and starting from scratch will allow the best technology of today to be applied to the new standard.
