Joseph Pareti, re; Intel product mix. I think this is the info you wanted.
I think the info you wanted is contained in the Intel roadmap charts posted on "Tom's Hardware".
It appears that Intel has segmented it's chips by the system resell price. They show two roadmaps, one for biz and one for home, but since the price breaks are the same for both segments you only need to look at one. I've shown the breakout for Q4'98
System Price-----Chip
$2k >------------PII/450
$1.5 - 2.0K-----PII/400
$1.2 - 1.5K-----PII/350
$1.0 - 1.2K-----Mendocino/300
$800 - $1.0K--Covington/266
<$800-----------P55C/233
The recommended chip migration from Q1'98 to Q4'98 by system price segment is:
PII/300 - PII/450
PII/266 - PII/400
PII/233 - PII/350
P55C/233 - Medocino/300
P55C/200 - Covington/266
P55C/166 - P55C/233
Current pricing according to Lehman Bros. is (1/27/98):
PII/300 - $530
PII/266 - $375
PII/233 - $268
P55C/233 - $193
P55C/200 - $$123
P55C/166 - $95
I don't think the chip prices can migrate with the speed enhancements. For example, it's difficult for me to believe that the COG of a $2200 system could support a $530 chip, or even an $1K system using a $193 chip.
While the makers are committed to thin margins on the low end machines, they need to maintain healthy margins on their high end offerings.
