Lauer, 21-year Computing and Digital Imaging Industry
Veteran Brings Significant Expertise in Growth, Development
and Operations to MetaCreations

The Board of Directors of MetaCreations Corporation (NASDAQ:MCRE) announced today that Gary L. Lauer has been elected a director
and appointed President and Chief Executive Officer, succeeding
William H. Lane who served as Interim President and Chief Operating
Officer.
Mr. Lauer, a 21-year computing and visual technology veteran, was
most recently President of Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI) World Trade
Group where he was responsible for revenues approaching $3.5 billion
and the management of a 4,000 person worldwide field organization.
Concurrently, the company's founding Chief Executive Officer,
John Wilczak, has resigned to spend more time with his family and
pursue other interests. Mr. Wilczak also resigned as a director but
has been retained as a consultant to the company through 1998.
According to Howard Morgan, Chairman of the Board, Mr. Lauer's
extensive senior management, marketing and business growth experience
within the visualization technology field, combined with
MetaCreations' world-class design and software development expertise,
will enable the company to continue its rapid growth and leadership
role within the visual computing industry.
Mr. Lauer's distinguished career within the computing and visual
technology industry incorporates a nine-year tenure at SGI where he
was instrumental in helping grow SGI from approximately $100 million
in revenue to revenue approaching $3.5 billion. He served in various
capacities at SGI from 1988 to 1997 including Vice President, North
American Marketing, Vice President and subsequently Senior Vice
President, North American Field Operations, and most recently as
President of SGI's World Trade Group and Executive Vice President of
Worldwide Field Operations. Previous to SGI, Mr. Lauer was with IBM
for eleven years where he held a variety of senior management
positions the last of which included responsibility for field
operations for IBM's U.S. Marketing and Services Group in the Silicon
Valley. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from University of
Southern California Business School.
Mr. Lauer, who currently resides in Los Altos Hills, California,
will relocate with his family to the Santa Barbara area where he will
manage all aspects of MetaCreations' worldwide operations from the
company's headquarters in Carpinteria, California.
