Bay Networks' ATM Backbone Brings Information Technology to Bedside for Genesys Health Systems; High-Speed Network Provides Competitive Advantage for Health Care Provider

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Feb. 23, 1998--Bay Networks, Inc. (NYSE:BAY) today announced that Genesys Health Systems, Michigan's leading integrated healthcare provider, has selected Bay Networks' products for its high-speed network.

The network is part of Genesys Health Systems' initiative to deliver quality efficient patient care by keeping the caregivers near the patients at all times. The network delivers information technology to the bedside, streamlining work around patients, allowing physicians and staff to spend more time on direct patient care, and less on paperwork.

Genesys Health Systems improved services while reducing operational costs by implementing a high-speed network that communicates data and images directly to the point-of-care. By deploying an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) backbone, Genesys Health Systems has created a competitive advantage and built an infrastructure capable of supporting emerging clinical and business applications.

"Bay Networks has provided Genesys with the products, systems and services we need to deliver the sophisticated applications that allow us to efficiently deliver patient-focused care," said Don Stapleton, director of MIS, telecommunications and networking for Genesys.

"Our evaluation team unanimously selected Bay Networks because of both the strength of the technology and the strength of the organization. Bay Networks had the best technology for us and also offered the technical expertise to help us implement the network quickly."

2.Bay Networks Delivers ATM Backbone To Staten Island University Hospital; Network Upgrade Lowers Hospital Overhead and Enables Better Patient Care

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Feb. 23, 1998--Bay Networks,(R) Inc. (NYSE:BAY) today announced that Staten Island University Hospital, a member of the North Shore Health System, has chosen Bay Networks' equipment as the backbone for "StatNet," the hospital's mission critical information network.

StatNet was designed to streamline operations and enable the hospital to be as responsive to medical care and business operations as it is to patients. This technology infrastructure will improve clinical care, operational productivity and financial management.

"Because managed care is pushing healthcare activity outside the hospital, the network is a mission critical component of our business plan," said Patrick Carney, vice president and CIO of Staten Island University Hospital. "When we designed StatNet, we sought a vendor with the widest array of expertise and products to help us implement these leading edge technologies, Bay Networks best fit our needs."

StatNet is the ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) data network that provides the hospital and its affiliated practices Intranet and extranet access to applications such as: real-time operating room scheduling, accounting, clinical data repository, data warehousing, master patient index, benefits processing, referral tracking and medical registration. Referencing the common medical term "stat," meaning immediately, StatNet's purpose is to deliver information quickly and on time.

"We chose Bay Networks because they offered the only product line that met all of our requirements - from the backbone out to the remote office," said Richard Jerothe, director of PC LAN Services at Staten Island University Hospital. "We recognized that the backbone network was a long-term investment and wanted to do it right the first time so we would not have to put in a new backbone in a few years. We had prior experience with Bay Networks and were impressed with the company's products and service."
