For historical reasons, I am expanding this thread to look at WDC spinoff Sandisk (SNDK) in addition to WDC.

  • Sandisk (NASDAQ: SNDK) was in focus on Tuesday as Wells Fargo started coverage on the company, as Western Digital ( WDC) officially split its flash and hard disk drive businesses.
  • "Initiate SNDK at Equal Weight and $56 PT," analyst Aaron Rakers wrote in a note to clients. Rakers said he has seen "tangible" signs of a recovery occurring in the market, though he is "more tempered" compared to management's expectations.
  • "SNDK is in the early stages of ramping their 218-layer BiCS8 3D NAND; leveraging new CMOS Bonded Array architecture," Rakers added. "CBA was highlighted a key architectural advancement that enables future independent scaling of memory array and CMOS; I/O speed enhancement. SNDK’s BiCS8 ramp + path to future generations (including recently announced 332-layer BiCS10), and the Sandisk + Kioxia economies-of- scale underpin a strong competitive positioning that we think is underappreciated."
