Ford Takes Delivery Of Bay Networks Accelar Routing Switches; First Customer Shipments of New Accelar 1200 Routing Switches to Ford's Dearborn Headquarters

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 1998--Bay Networks, Inc. today announced that Ford Motor Company is using Bay Networks' Accelar 1200 routing switches within Ford's Global TCP/IP Intranet.

Ford accepted delivery of the first two production units in December 1997 and has plans to deploy additional Accelar 1200 routing switches at Ford's Dearborn, Michigan engineering campus for Gigabit-speed data communications between the Ford facilities.

"Ford uses its network intensively in its business and needs the high-speed capabilities of the Accelar routing switch," said Dave Shrigley, Bay Networks' Executive Vice President for Marketing, Sales, and Service. "We are very pleased they were the very first U.S. customer to take delivery of an Accelar 1000 series routing switch."

Ford Motor Company is a technology leader in its use of computer aided engineering (CAE) analysis for the development of automotive products. The network is a key element of the CAE environment at Ford and the Accelar 1000 routing switch products will enable the network at Ford to keep pace with increasing performance demands.

Bay Networks began shipping the Accelar 1000 routing switch product family in December 1997. By combining the functions of a traditional router and a traditional switch in one product, they deliver data throughput speeds as much as ten times as fast as a traditional router for a fraction of the cost.

Ford Motor Company operates one of the world's largest and busiest intranets, serving more than 80,000 employees around the world. The Ford 2000 program, launched in 1995, includes among its objectives the integration of Ford's worldwide operations into a single organization with centralized vehicle design, development, and engineering. This requires extensive sharing of documents, designs, and other information on a global basis. Ford's intranet home page receives more than one million hits per month.
