The Cases of Inspector Vrenko (Primeri inspektorja Vrenka

Until a month ago, if you had mentioned Slovenia to me, I would have thought of a few skiers, some champion bicycle racers, and of course, Luka Doncic.. Now I can Maribor and Inspector Vremko to that list.

Inspector Vremko is a crack investigator who happens to be based in Maribor, the largest city in the most scenic part of a very scenic country. He often works with his own team, but also once in a while helps out with tough cases elsewhere in the country. The cases are interesting, but the real stars are Maribor and the gorgeous Slovenian countryside. Maribor itself is almost 900 years old and features beautifully preserved quarters of the city that date all the way back to Roman times.

And that is not all beauty on display. The series is directed in almost old-fashioned manner, eschewing the quick jump cuts that have become de rigeur these days, but this serves to highlight the top notch shot making and cinematography. Also outstanding in the soundtrack, which featuring mostly acoustic orchestral and ensemble compositions.

So far there have been two seasons totalling twelve double episodes covering six cases. I am hoping there will be more. And if I was a European looking for a nice place to chill out for a weeks, I would opt for exploring the streets of Maribor and walking the surrounding forests and hills.
