These are absolutely gorgeous poems. Green captures many of the universalities of being a woman and mother, and all the emotions I'm feeling now watching the boys grow away.
And
how at last, as I let go
and slip behind them, I ease
my bones into the universe.
As we waited in line to check into the hotel this past weekend, there was a young couple in front of us. He was holding the baby-about one-and she was chasing a three. I said to her, "You have beautiful children," and she rolled her eyes and laughed. I thought of ours at home staying with friends-so independent and big. There must have been a sadness in my face because Dan took my hand as we watched that little family walk away. In a few years we will be a family of two again, at least in terms of daily life. An odd thought.
Did you notice that Green didn't talk about the male/female part of her life, a marriage, a husband? Does she in other poems?
Anyway-thank you. I very much enjoyed these.
