Is Macromedia losing focus? Not really, it is more of a case of their
primary market (CD-ROM development) collapsed. Now, you have the Internet.
The major problem with applying the MACR tools to web-site design has to do
with bandwidth. On a CD-ROM, a programmer can place all kinds interesting
graphics in their games. Their main consideration is the speed of the user's computer.
Also, even when computers are not fast enough users can buy graphic accelerators
to enhance performance. Therefore, the programmer can/has to use the top-of-line
software.
Now, MACR is trying to design tools that apply to the Internet where
packing graphics into the smallest package is the most important thing, for now.
However, one day (who knows when) bandwidth will explode then internet game designers will
be back to working in the CD-ROM model where content is everything and memory usage is of
secondary consideration. In the meantime, MACR is designing its tools for usage
in the bandwidth-scarce world, while at the same time waiting for the bandwidth-plenty
world to emerge.
