This is NOT breaking, btw - there were reports he said this 5 days ago but I haven't seen video of it.:

The "minerals deal" wasn't a minerals deal at all, not sure why Trump tried selling it as such.

It was a very aggressively funded sovereign investment fund, with good oversight opportunities from the US. It's an utterly amazing deal for Ukraine.

I wouldn't be surprised if Russia and other countries rich in natural resources will adopt this concept, but Putin is likely just trolling to get some sense into Zelensky.

Nobody is interested in buying these rare earths from anyone but China, not because we couldn't extract them ourselves, but because China is selling them at amazing prices. If China stopped selling them or increased the price too much, we could easily start mining them within a few months ourselves.

But for some reason China keeps selling at prices that would instantly bankrupt anyone even thinking about competing, the quality is excellent and the volume isn't artificially suppressed.
