Jim,

I love it!

The 'staff building' you refer to, though, died years ago. When I was working with the IBM Yorktown Research Division in '92, they were already being transformed from 'centralized pure theoretical' into 'localized business applicable' research. Major shifts of focus and staff were occurring so that the theoretical physics and mathematical research being pursued was of a type that would be quickly and efficiently transferable into products and processes at the manufacturing and programming centers. Those who could adapt to the new paradigm were kept on, those who couldn't were 'surplused'. Yorktown wasn't one big centralized research facility, but dozens and dozens of separate 'self-contained', loosely coupled, research labs. They were just housed in one big place.

They weren't looking as hard at the formation of galaxies, as they were looking at the atomic processes involved with making copper behave itself in chip production, or the nature of Gigantic Magneto Resistive head technology and the magnetic media necessary to allow IBM to become the first out of the gate with the newest technologies that others would 'line-up-for' to license.

I think this announcement is a testimony to the changes that management finally understood they needed to make and that the arrival of LVG accelerated.

Ben A.
