Gary - couple of questions. Do you think multiservice over IP can ever achieve the reliability of ATM, and what would be the timeframe? Second, how do you think ATM over ADSL would affect the equation.

Bradley; very good question. All I can tell you is that IP oriented vendors want an IP world at the edge. At the same time most IP vendors reluctantly surrender the core of the network to ATM. Exceptions would be the gigabit and terabit ethernet companies which feel they can supplant this as well. The bottom line here is that in order for IP to become the environment of choice, these companies will need to address all the issues which ATM addresses today....QoS, scalability, reliability, etc.. Your guess is as good as mine as to when or even IF the IP vendors can make this happen. However, there's lots of dollars going into this and these vendors also know that the market window is now! They're getting more and more aggressive in pursuing carriers using their experience with the ISP's as a tool.

As for ATM over ADSL, I'm not sure that changes the playing field much. You can run any protocol over ADSL. ADSL being a layer 2 technology is just another transport medium. In the end the carrier/ISP/CableCo. can still choose to run whatever protocol they wish. What ADSL WILL DO, it put greater demand on the infrastructure and require more backbone buildout which is great for the networkers because it will stimulate the use of bandwidth consuming applications.
