Shooting at a stationary target on a stand 3 x a year isn't going to do jack-shit for you
in a self-defense scenario.
You need to learn how to draw from concealment with a pistol and hit multiple targets, still,
and moving, at everything from 3 ft to 35 yards under the pressure of the clock and competition.
Take a 2-3 day class and then get involved in competition.
And get competent with a red dot or scoped AR style rifle out to 200-300 yards.
Those are the basics.

PS: A rifle is preferable to a shotgun. But, yes, a 12 g shotgun is okay, but limited at distance
and better than no rifle. Wives and children will be fine with a 5.56 rifle. A 12 g shotgun, not so much.
