As we wait for the all clear sign of a lasting bottom it's probably a good idea to remind everyone (including myself) what we are looking for when that happens.

The information is right there in the market data that I share each day after the market closes.

It's in the Advance/Decline numbers of the NYSE.

How do we know that a rally like we had today was not a real bottom?

A real bottom will form on a 90% upside day in the Adv/Decline numbers. Or at least an 80% upside day followed within days by another 80% upside day.

It's really hard not to jump all over some of the apparent relative bargains in stocks prices as compared to 52 week highs. But buying too soon as I know I have often done in the past can soon leave an investor holding losing positions.

I am waiting for at least an 80% upside day. A 90% upside day is the all clear sign. But 2 of those 80% upside days in close succession often works just as well.

As good as BPNDX of 30 or lower usually is at marking a bottom in the last 20 years we have seen BPNDX as low as 1 in 2008 and 2 after the Covid shutdown. BPSOX can go to zero under those kinds of bear market conditions.
