A very curious choice of words "gets a reprieve." Where I come from the side getting it's ass kicked doesn't give reprieves, I'm unclear how that would work, the mechanics of it. The side kicking ass usually gets whatever it decides it wants and doesn't need permission. I think that's how it works.
