An AA battery is 5/8 inch thick. Not .256in

2* 5/8 = 1.25 inches of additional footspace if laid side by side

so, it is possible that the total MINIMUM size of the external drive is:
Drive 3.37in.

+ 1.25in (batteries side by side) =

4.62 inches long minimum. And the external drive's depth would have to
be at least 5/8 inch.

This does not include the plastic housing case, shock-absorbant
material, any interfaces such as infra-red sensors and associated
electronics, or cable and PC card adaptor. 4.62 inches is still long
enough to obviously be a concern if you want to fit it in your
pocket.
