30-Day Progressive Rock Song Challenge continued... 16/30

Day 16: A song that’s a classic favorite

For today’s pick, I’m going with Klaatu – Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft.

This song blends classic prog elements with an infectious melody and hopeful lyrics. No matter how many times I hear it, it never gets old.

While Klaatu may not be widely considered a true progressive rock band, they embraced elaborate arrangements, conceptual storytelling, and orchestration, all hallmarks of progressive music. I think they exist in a gray area between prog rock and progressive pop—similar to 10cc.

I searched for a live performance but didn’t find one I liked, so I’m sharing the official Klaatu version. Interestingly, live versions of The Carpenters’ cover of Calling Occupants seem to be more widely available.

For an inside look at the song’s production, here’s a interesting video where Klaatu's drummer Terry Draper breaks down how it was recorded and arranged.

Feel free to share your own classic favorites!
