Internet Initiative Japan To Cut Fees For Individual Subscribers

TOKYO (Nikkei)-Internet Initiative Japan Inc. will from April 1 reduce Internet access charges for individual subscribers as part of an ambitious plan to lessen the company's dependence on commercial accounts. The new fee structure stipulates a monthly levy of 1,900 yen for 10 hours of use, with extra time charged at 5 yen per minute.

Access of 15 hours monthly will cost 3,400 yen, and the 20-hour plan will be 4,900 yen. The initial registration fee will be reduced to 4,900 yen, from 8,000 yen.

The company's current flat rate of 4,900 yen per month is disadvantageous for infrequent users of online services, one subscriber claimed.

Plans call for expansion of the company's individual subscriber base to 1 million customers by March 1999, from 30,000 at present.
