Hi Brehm

Rumors of the dollar being replaced, recalled, etc. come up with some regularity. Makes for some interesting conspiracy theories. The current set seem to circle around replacing the dollar with something crypto-like, but there are a lot of variations. I don't see it happening because I can't see anyone getting congress to act on something like that.

That being said, tere are some "real" discussions of the government issuing a "digital dollar" or Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The idea has been discussed by the federal reserve (public discussions, not secret) over the last couple of years federalreserve.gov . However, from what I recall reading, the fed has been very clear it won't do anything without congressional action. Article I, Section 8, Clause 5 of the U.S. Constitution, grants Congress the exclusive power to coin money and to regulate its value, so the fed won't act on its own (or at least that is the theory).
