President Donald Trump and Elon Musk continue to say they are cutting bloat, waste and fraud from the government while issuing mass layoffs, but the one place money isn’t being saved is on the links.
HuffPost has been tracking the taxpayer cost for Trump’s golf excursions since he took office on Jan. 20, and the president has hit a new milestone.
Trump explains the reason behind his tariffs
That milestone?
Well, he has surpassed $20 million dollars in taxpayer money spent golfing, per HuffPost, already this term. In fact, he has blown right past the $20 million mark and is currently sitting at more than $26 million spent playing golf since he took office.
The site said that Trump arrived Saturday morning at his golf course in West Palm Beach, across the Intracoastal Waterway, from Mar-A-Lago, to play another round. It reported that it is Trump’s 14th day spent golfing on that course, and 18th day golfing in total since he was sworn-in on Jan. 20. That means the president has spent more than a quarter of his second term golfing.
The actual total cost, per HuffPost, is currently $26,127,531. To put that in perspective, the president spent $151.5 million playing golf during his entire first term. So, he is on pace to blow away that total in his second term.
For those who argue that they are Trump’s courses, that is factored into the cost. So, how does his playing golf cost so much?
The source of the figures is a 2019 Government Accountability Office report that examined Trump’s first four trips to Mar-a-Lago during his first administration. You can see the report, here. It calculated that each of those trips cost $3,383,250, and that was based on 2017 dollars meaning that the actual cost today is likely higher than the estimate.
The costs involved with him golfing in Florida include flying in on Air Force One. Also, per the site, the military flies the vehicles for his motorcade in on C-17s each time he makes the trip. Also, because Mar-a-Lago, where Trump stays while he plays at his courses, is on the water, police boats with machine guns and a Coast Guard vessel have to be called in to patrol. The site said additional costs included law enforcement and bomb sniffing dogs. |
