Joe and J.S.,
MVF is another propriety standard of DVD-RAM. We will see DVD-RAM, DVD+RW before DVD-R. They are just simply different standards with slightly different capacity and format.

VCD's image quality is about 360 x 250 for 1 hour, at 1:1 the image quality actually very good but it becomes blocky when scaled to full screen. Current CD-ROM's speed is faster than DVD but the capacity is too small for mpeg2.

>> Is there a reason why a segment of people in China (and there are many nouveau riche) are not upgrading to DVD players? <<

Yes there are:
1) DVD is fairly new and pricey at this moment (will change in a year). OTOH, anyone has a CD-ROM can play VCD!
2) Relative small library of DVD titles (will change in few years)
3) mpeg2 codec is too expensive (will change in 2 years), OTOH anyone has a TV-Tuner card, a CDR and a typical PC should able to burn their own VCD!
4) read Baoho Chang's previous post.

I wish I bought CUBE instead of OAKT. CUBE is a good company but the slower than expect take-off of DVD has hurt CUBE considerably and allow its competitors to enhance their own DVD solutions against C-CUBE's.
