Saint-Pierre

This is the latest effort from Allan Hawko, best known for the crime series Republic of Doyle, set in Newfoundland. This time the setting is the island of Saint-Pieere, the largest of a group of small islands that are part of France even though they lie just south of Newfoundland. Hawko’s character Fitz ends up there are publicly arresting the Premier of Newfoundland, who happens to be sharing Fitz’s old house with his ex-wife and kids, and hence a re-assignment across the ocean after the arrest for corruption is rescinded. His new partner on Saint-Pierre has an obsession of her own, trying to nab the main criminal on the island, so it is no surprise they are able to develop a slightly wary working relationship.

The best thing about the series is the setting on this unique island, a bit of France mixed with a lot of Newfoundland out in the Atlantic Ocean, though any verisimilitude is undercut undercut by the lack of lousy weather. (If you are wondering about the odd orange-y lighting in a few of the later episodes, they were filmed amid smoke from fires in Nova Scotia, unmentioned in the script.)

Nothing special, but often entertaining....
