Growing up, gambling was strictly forbidden in our family. I later found out why, my Great Uncle Tom had lost a quarter section of land in a poker game. During Prohibition (1915–1924 in Saskatchewan) poker games involving high stake wagers like land would have been illegal and considered a serious offense.

Tom's brother William earned the distinction of being the first person in Saskatchewan to get a ticket for driving too slow. He was focused on listening to news of the Bay of Pigs invasion on his truck radio during the drive from the farm to the city that he caused a two-mile-long line of cars to pile up behind him.

Bill and Tom were born in Litchfield, Minnesota.
