Major city at risk as US volcano set to explode

Several dozen earthquakes have been recorded in Alaska near a volcano that experts say could soon erupt.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) reported detecting no fewer than 55 tremors over the past week, alongside an increase in seismic activity around Mount Spurr.

Emergency plans have been quickly put in place for the 300,000 residents of Anchorage, who have been urged to stock up on essential supplies in case of an eruption.

Residents of Alaska’s largest city rushed to supermarkets to purchase masks and water containers to prepare for the potential disaster.

Matt Haney, the lead scientist at the AVO, warned that a Mount Spurr eruption could be "explosive," with ash clouds likely.

Although Anchorage is not located in the immediate impact zone, the city could still be blanketed in ash, which can cause serious respiratory issues.

The AVO said in a statement on Friday:"Volcanic unrest continues at Mount Spurr volcano and is characterized by ongoing earthquake activity. Seismicity remains elevated with about 55 earthquakes over the last week. While this is similar to the previous week, earthquake rates have shown variability during this current period of unrest."
