I've been wrestling with the question is there a reason China would dump SWIFT or would USA be able to keep China from using it. And it appears either one can happen. SWIFT adoption of Ripple if that does materialize would make SWIFT's purpose about as good as it can get. I doubt China would stop using it willfully because it will be very efficient, versatile, cheap and fast, so I'll rule that one out. Would Trump try to stop China from using it, anything is possible with Trump. But would other countries follow suit like they did banning Russia from using SWIFT. I really don't think so since Trump's tariff policies have united practically everyone against the US and moved them closer to China. The ancient enemy of China, Viet Nam has signed a flurry of trade agreements with China, only a person like Trump could accomplish that. Trump could hurt SWIFT but he can't destroy it. SWIFT can and does use any currency, so if the USD did collapse it would still function.
Countries can stop another from using SWIFT 1 2. SWIFT is incorporated under Belgian law and has to comply with decisions confirmed by its home country government 2. Sanctioning a nation by eliminating its access to SWIFT can have negative impacts for trade partners and others around the world 4. The governance of SWIFT allows individual countries to ban other countries from using it 5
