FC, every president leaves behind a mess for the next president to clean up.

Carter may have been put into an unfortunate position, but if that made the job too difficult for him, perhaps he wasn't the right man for it.

Reagan arguably started with less than what Carter started with, yet Reagan ended up with a highly successful presidency (even though the left to this day still blame Reagan for all the ills of modern capitalism).

By the way, Brandon made the mistake of trying to revive Carter's economic policies. Brandon reversed course somewhat in his final year in office, but by then it was too late (politically-speaking, mind you, not from a practical standpoint, which by all measures was a success).
