I did some research on Cliff Mass, and there appear to be two of him. I started out looking to see if he is funded by the oil and gas industry, but I got diverted by by something else I found.

One Cliff Mass does legitimate climate research which is published in journals and subject to peer review, i.e. he is doing actual science.

Then there is the other Cliff Mass. What he publishes on his blog is there because it would not stand up to peer review, i.e. it is not science but politics and ideology.

Due to my background -- I have worked analyzing several large scientific databases, including one on measurements from a systems of buoys deployed in the Pacific -- I understand what he is doing on the blog.

If you have a large enough database, sheer randomness means that if you keep on looking you can find isolated segments of data that support just about any position you take. An analogy would be that if you keep on flipping a coin long enough you will inevitably get the occasional incidence of getting 10 'heads' in a row.

That does not mean that you have disproven that flipping a coin is random. It means that you have narrowed the focus sufficiently to obscure reality.

This is exactly what Mass does. He would never publish the stuff he puts on the blog in a scientific journal because he would be ridiculed.

I never was able to find out if Mass is funded by the oil and gas industry or by by anti-climate change types, but it would not surprise me in the slightest.
