How 3rd generation tomato paste trader Armando Gandolfi of Parma, Italy bartered tomato processing equipment to PLA General Liu Yi, economic director of the Uyghur Xinjiang Province in return for six years of tomato paste.

Tomatoes and tomato paste are not traditional foods in China, but General Liu sees huge growth domestically to augment the million tons of tomato paste his company currently exports globally.

Tomato sauce is a favorite menu item in Africa, but fairly costly for African income.

General Liu has solved this dilemma by adding 50% non-nutritional soy fiber to tomato paste headed for Africa to lower the price point - but his 50% tomato paste is labeled as 100% tomato paste. A visit to the largest tomato sauce producer in Ghana found General Liu and his "nephew" running the company.

African tomato farmers are now unemployed with many smuggled into Italy where they harvest cherry tomato varieties which cannot yet be harvested by machine.

Chris Rufer, owner of The Morning Star company in California, produces far more tomato paste than Italy and produces the same quantity as General Liu as they each work to lower costs.
