The Palm Pilot (huh huh huh -he said Palm) uses AAA batteries because non-active B/W LCD tech drains very little power. Just think how long the batteries last in a LCD digital watch. Years.

An electro-mechanical device like Vapor! would use a lot more energy than a Palm Pilot simply because of the physics involved.

Palm Pilot = no moving parts. All functions stay in the electrical realm. (save LCD, which is electro-chemical)

Vapor! = spinning disc, read/write head movement, and associated relays all constitute moving parts- and this doesn't even include the actual electronic functions and circuits that need more battery draining power. Vapor! is virtually guaranteed to need more power than many of its intended source devices in order to function.
