The theory that with global trade humming, it’s fine for different nations to “specialize” in their chosen competencies - and let others do other things - must be considered as having been debunked. One super-productive country like China seems able and willing to make absolutely everything - and, in most cases, will outcompete domestic producers.

In the meantime, we don’t even make our own medications anymore. And… international relations are prone to conflicts and supply line disruptions - be it due to tensions, or wars, or Covid.

Looks like everyone needs to be able to supply their own basics. The best they can.
