Bill: Have you seen the CBD notice from Lockheed Martin seeking interested parties for research into developing low cost fiber for automotive applications? The work would be done on behalf of DOT with the objective of developing a high modulus fiber (70M I believe) with a 1% strain to failure, and a cost of 3-5 dollars a pound - not limited to carbon fiber. The notice discusses some of the production impediments to achieving the above goals and implies that we're a long way from general wide-spread applications. $5.00/lb seemed to be an absolute upper limit, while 70M seemed to be a lower limit for feasibility. Do you happen to know what the more important physical characteristics might be of the ZOLT-manufactured fibers in the $5/lb. range?

regards, aa
