This is a perfect encapsulation of the last 100 years in the West.

Conservative popes appointed a representative mix of conservatives and progressives to the College of Cardinals out of a sense of fairness.

This fairness gave liberals a chance to gain the top spot, at which time they immediately began unfairly excluding conservatives.
In the conclave, Francis broke a tradition held by his predecessors: appointing cardinals in a balanced way between progressives and conservatives.
