AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) shares rose 4.5% in extended trading on Tuesday after the semiconductor giant posted first-quarter results and guidance that topped Wall Street's forecast, aided by data center strength.

For the period ending March 30, AMD earned $0.96 per share as revenue rose 36% year-over-year to come in at $7.44B. Data Center revenue rose 57% year-over-year to $3.7B, aided by its MI300 AI accelerator and its Instinct and EPYC processors.

Revenue from the Client and Gaming segment, which houses AMD's PC business, rose 28% year-over-year to $2.8B. Client revenue was $2.3B, up 68% year-over-year, while gaming revenue tumbled 30% year-over-year to $647M, largely due to a decrease in semi-custom revenue. Sales from the Embedded segment fell 3% year-over-year to $823M.

Analysts had expected the company to earn $0.94 on revenues of $7.12B.
