Didn't hit the 18%, but had one at 12.5%. One good thing I did with those expensive mortgages is that they were all adjustable rate. Over the years, the effect was similar to owning bonds - payments kept coming down every year.

Adjustable rates back in those days had limits on how often they could raise rates - and by how much - and they even had lifetime caps. So, I decided it was a good deal.
