Wasn't there an old Star Trek episode where Kirk and his crew encountered an "advanced" race who had left behind their physical bodies, and simply communicated through space by sending each other their thoughts? Apparently, and with all due respect to the late Gene Roddenberry, no advance in civilization can be detected as here in the late 20th century we have acquired this thought-beaming ability. Dare I say we see less civilization...?
