It is an American surgeon who flies up to Canada to perform the surgery. I have asked my friend for details and will forward when he responds.

As you retired early and are "financially comfortable", if you are faced with a joint replacement, you might investigate private surgery in your own province and the option of travelling to the US for immediate surgery instead of waiting for 24 months or longer for assessment and surgery in Canada. The wait times will increase for joint replacement in Canada as the population is aging.
