Not in the same category, but tangentially related, the mixture of wood shavings and candle vax makes one hell of a firestarter, even when the woods are a little wet. Every so often I mix a bit of wood scrapes from my chainsaw with leftover candles and keep them for when I go camping. The good thing about it (aside from the fact that it works great) is that it is dry, compact, and portable. Which you can't say about camp kerosene.

BTW, for those of you who are not hardcore campers and go with your cars, but still may have to lit fire after rain, if you don't have the wood chips and vax, you can mix a *small* amount of gas with cooking oil and get your fire going.
