UMich year-ahead inflation expectations surge to +7.3% in May; consumer sentiment slips

The University of Michigan's Consumer Sentiment Index edged down to 50.8 in May (preliminary), vs. 53.1 consensus, from 52.2 in April.

Sentiment has dropped nearly 30% since January, Surveys of Consumers Director Joanne Hsu said in a statement. "Tariffs were spontaneously mentioned by nearly three-quarters of consumers, up from almost 60% in April; uncertainty over trade policy continues to dominate consumers’ thinking about the economy."

Year-ahead inflation expectations jumped to +7.3% in April from +6.5% in March.

Implied inflation at the five-year horizon drifted up to +4.6% from +4.4% in the earlier month.

"The final release for May will reveal the extent to which the May 12 pause on some China tariffs leads consumers to update their expectations," Hsu said.

Current Conditions Index: 57.6 vs. 59.6 expected and 59.8 prior.

Expectations Index: 46.5 vs. 48.0 consensus and 47.3 prior.
