I know exactly what caused that.

My son suddenly started getting D's for grades. When I went to talk to the teacher and she showed me his scores they were.

The zero's were home work. He wasn't even handing the homework in. No bother he knew he could pass without it.
The 100's were tests.

They are scoring home work at almost the same level as tests as far as the overall grades were scored.
This lets students go on to the next grade that didn't really grasp the concept.
The reason they do this is money, the school gets paid for students moving to the next grade.
