We never should have given up Cuba in the first place. We won it fair and square in the Spanish-American war.

I think the reason we did not push the Cuban government to sue for statehood in 1902 was the same reason we left Mexico post-haste after the Marines marched through the Halls of Montezuma in 1847, despite some quarters calling for us to annex all of Mexico: rightly or wrongly we did not want a large Spanish-speaking population to join the Union.
