Short Interest rose by 35,507 for period ending 5/15
I assume short sellers trade so amount is net short. So they could have sold short 100K shares then didn't cover all of them during that period.

Snapshot in Time: Short interest is reported twice a month, reflecting the number of shares that have been sold short but not yet closed or "covered" on those specific dates.
The pop up seems to explain those large volume days of selling
