The smoke from the Canadian fires has actually reached the Mediterranean, and is causing air quality warning in several nearby American states.

The outlook is bad, with high winds and heat in the forecast. For instance, in the area of the big fire that has sprung up in NE BC and led to several evacuations and temporary closures of the Alaska Highway, the only road to the north, the winds are supposed to hit 50+ kph, a nightmare for the firefighters.

To explain a little more about the evacuations in the Prairie provinces, in the north many communities have only one road in and out. For some there is only an ice road in the winter, and other communities are fly in only. This means that some of those evacuated have never been outside their home communities. Imagine what a trip it must be to suddenly be evacuated over 1000 kn away to Niagara Falls because those are the nearest available hotel rooms!
