It seems quite understandable that Zelenskyy didn't tell Trump. Trump has made no secret of his admiration for Putin and his dislike of Zelenskyy. Trump would have loved to be able to ingratiate himself to Putin by warning him of the attack ahead of time. It wasn't a breach of protocol, it was a necessary precaution to keep the information from getting to Putin.
