As I remember the spin as a 13 year old, Israel was a mighty midget that took down all the Soviet commie evil arab countries that were determined to obliterate it. But the US equipment they had and their God -given real estate and moral superiority easily overpowered the inferior Arab countries with their Russian arms. The Liberty was a minor footnote, and its sinking was described as an unfortunate accident of war. I was even then a news geek, so vaguely aware of it,. The rest of my world gave it a passing shrug.

It did make the bottom of the front page of the NYT, with a few more column inches on p.19:



But the editorial page the next day pretty much dismissed the incident, with obligatory semi-stern language at the end:
