Nice chart of the 1966 — 1982 nightmare. A large scale market range - a long series of Bull and Bear markets - while the purchasing power of the dollar was getting devastated by inflation. An additional long torture for the Greatest Generation, the survivors of WWII.

Many years ago, I estimated that if you bought the top in 1965, it took you over 30 years to get back your money (adjusted for inflation) plus a return roughly equal to the US treasuries.

In ‘79 - ‘80 you needed to make almost 15% a year to literally remain in place.
