Apparently he ducked when the vigilantes shot at him.

That caused the vigilante's bullets to miss him, and instead strike and kill someone else.

He's charged with murder by virtue of the fact that he ducked a bullet meant to kill him, and that bullet then hit and killed someone else.

Maybe Utah has a law that if you duck a bullet intended for you, and that bullet strikes someone else, you bear responsibility for that person's injury or death.

Kind of like "Stand your ground".

Maybe it's called, "Take it like a man".
