It sounds like how software development works, not hardware development. He has no formal project management background. Or management of any kind. You shouldn't even develop software that way, although it is way too common. With software, you can get away with all-nighters and nose to the grindstone. Or at least usually. But sometimes you need to kill the project and change direction because some of your fundamental assumptions were wrong. As to his management chops, just look at Tesla. It is non-functional when Musk is not in residence. A company of its size should be able to operate when a single individual is not there. But Tesla cannot. He is literally indispensable to the company. Without Elon, Tesla is dead as an automotive company.
