Naked ambition, not unlike Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, or the British Empire. A resource-poor country with a major benefactor goes on a major spree. Iran and Qatar control the world's largest natural gas field, and there has been speculation since the US approached Syria on normalizing diplomatic relations that a pipeline would run from the field through Syria and Turkey to supply NATO in Europe. Turkey is also supposedly on US/Israel's hit list.
