Michael Mann is not a director for nuance, just action and slick visuals. I thought De Niro's performance in this one was vastly better than Pacino, who just trotted out all of his usual cliche mannerisms.

"The Score" is a much subtler take on a similar situation with De Niro playing a very similar character and Ed Norton on board as his sidekick.
